A slow-moving storm system brought heavy rainfall to parts of Sequoyah County through Tuesday morning, flooding roads and prompting a flood warning across the region.

More than five inches of rain fell in isolated areas from Marble City to Sallisaw during several hours of steady downpours. Most of the rainfall occurred over a short period, overwhelming drainage systems and making roads nearly impassable in some spots.

The storm continued drifting east toward Muldrow, Spiro, Vian, and Gore, where additional pockets of heavy rain were reported. Gore received exceptionally high rainfall earlier in the morning, contributing to localized flooding.

Lightning and thunder accompanied the rain, adding to travel concerns. While the system showed signs of weakening by late morning, saturated ground and runoff remained a concern for low-lying areas.

The Boys & Girls Club of Sequoyah County announced Tuesday it will be closed for the remainder of the week after flooding left approximately a foot of water inside the building.

“This closure is necessary to ensure our facility is safe and ready for our kids once the water has receded and clean-up is complete,” the statement said.
