A Family Tradition 13 Years in the Making
Among the athletes is 21-year-old Kyle Dunson, who has competed in the Special Olympics since he was eight. His mother, Melonie, said the event has become a central part of their family’s life.
“It’s a part of their life. It’s just totally a part of them,” she said. “They love all the attention, the cheering, the clapping, and the signs.”
Kyle competes in bocce ball and is part of a transitional program through Owasso Public Schools, where he continues to build job and life skills.

Melonie Dunson says the sendoff—and the community behind it—means everything.
“The community support for our children is beyond compare. It makes our hearts happy. And the kids look forward to it every single year.”
Owasso Public Schools continues to support and grow its Special Olympics team, making moments like this possible for families like the Dunsons.
