The town of Webbers Falls has appointed a new police chief following the sudden resignation of its former chief and after laying off two officers just last week.
Austin Alden, who previously served as a corporal and school resource officer, is now leading the department.
The previous Chief, Mike James, resigned unexpectedly on Monday. Alden says the resignation came as a surprise, but he stepped into the role to prevent a total shutdown of the department.
"As of yesterday he promoted me to Assistant Chief to keep the department open because he was going to resign due to personal issues," Alden said, "So I obviously took it to keep it open, that way we didn't have to shut down and wait for another meeting."
Alden was formally appointed as Chief at Tuesday night's city business meeting.
Just two weeks ago, the city laid off both of its officers due to budget issues. One of the officers laid off had been recovering from a gunshot wound sustained during a traffic stop in March.
Alden said those cuts were necessary to help stabilize the department’s finances.
The Webbers Falls Police Department has a school resource officer, a full-time officer and two part-time officers. Alden says he’s also been in contact with other local agencies for support.
"So far it looks like we are going to be okay and we should be able to provide full coverage to the entire town 24/7," Alden said.
The Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office has offered to assist with calls if needed.
With the department now under his leadership, Alden says his first priority is getting a handle on the department’s financials so they can begin rebuilding.
He hopes to bring on more officers when the budget allows and eventually upgrade equipment and vehicles to improve operations.
