It's the dawning of a new era here in Jenks, as former defensive coordinator Adam Gaylor takes over as head coach after Keith Riggs announced his retirement. But don't expect much change here in the Jenks program, as the Trojans look to extend their record of 36 consecutive winning seasons.
"No pressure Coach Gaylor, right, like stepping into this role. You walk through this place it just oozes tradition and winning," says first-year head coach Adam Gaylor.
The roster and coaching staff may look different for the Trojans, but the expectations are still the same. Bring home another gold ball.
More from News On 6 Sports Director John Holcomb below:
"Every morning I walk up there on the third floor and walk by all those gold trophies, and all those state championship pictures and see all those eyeballs and coach Trimble looking down on me, and I understand what those expectations are," says Gaylor.
The starting quarterback position is still up for grabs, with three players competing for the job. No matter who is under center, expect a high-paced offense.
"It'll be faster than it was last year, from a pace standpoint. It'll be interesting," says Gaylor.
The main focal point for the Trojan offense will be senior running back Kaydin "KD" Jones. The Oklahoma State commit has rushed for 27-hundred yards and 32 touchdowns, and is looking to end his high school career with a state title.
"This is what I've been working for since I was little. It's my last season before I go to college. I haven't won a gold ball yet, so obviously that's my goal, that's my biggest goal," says Jones.
The Jenks defense returns four starters, and Gaylor will be relying on their leadership early in the season.
"We've got some sophomores that are going to start and play quite a bit for us, so those older guys are kind of indoctrinating them into the culture defensively that we've built here," says Gaylor.
The sting of last year's semifinal loss to Owasso has motivated Jenks since last November, and the Trojans enter 20-25 with a chip on their shoulder.
"I kind of like that we're not favored to win or anything like that. This is kind of the first year that I've felt that I've been at Jenks, that we're really set to win," says Jones. "The vibe just feels different. It feels like we're all just working together."
The Trojans open the season on August 29th at Edmond Santa Fe.
