If Oklahoma is going to take a leap forward in 2025, it has to happen on the offensive side of the ball. And in the early days of fall camp, the Sooners are showing signs of life behind a new-look attack.
Quarterback John Mateer, who was named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch List on Monday, knows the pressure is on and he’s embracing it.
“You got the perfect system, quarterback, everything is right there for you,” Mateer said. “The guys around you, the coaches around you — you can’t ask for anything better.”
Practice began with a full team circle around some intense one-on-one drills, creating a competitive edge right out of the gate.
“It gives us a little spark for the day,” said linebacker Kip Lewis. “You better come with it or you’re going to get embarrassed in front of everybody.”
One of the early standout plays came from transfer receiver Keyontez Lewis, who made a highlight grab that got the sideline buzzing.
Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle is installing a system that’s already generating confidence. Mateer said the wide receiver room is loaded with weapons, and the unit is building chemistry fast.
“I look to this side of the field, I got somebody to go to. I look here, I look in front of me, I look beside me — it’s everywhere,” Mateer said. “It’s pretty dangerous when you’ve got weapons everywhere and we all trust each other.”
