Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb continues to assess key position battles as the Golden Hurricane work through fall camp, with offensive line and safety standing out as two of the biggest question marks entering the 2025 season.

Offensive Line

Transfers have stabilized much of the offensive line, with the tackle and center spots mostly locked down. Ole Miss transfer Cam East is expected to start at left tackle, bringing size and physicality to the group. On the right side, JaQuan Adams reunites with Lamb after playing for him at both East Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb. The competition remains open at the guard positions, with a half-dozen players still battling for starting roles.

Safety

Defensively, safety remains a concern. Ashton and Zach Williams were thrown into the fire as freshmen last season, while OSU transfer Ty Williams adds another piece to the puzzle. Georgia transfer Jalen Kennedy, who brings a national championship pedigree, is the most experienced of the group but has dealt with injuries will play, but also has a primary special teams role.

Cornerback

There is more experience in the secondary overall. Cornerback Elijah Green is locked in as a starter, with redshirt senior and Booker T. Washington alum Keuan Parker also expected to contribute. Utah State transfer JD Drew, a Tulsa native, adds even more depth to the unit.

One certainty for Tulsa: sophomore Kirk Francis has officially been named the starting quarterback. At American Athletic Conference Media Days, Francis highlighted the trust between him and Lamb and praised the offensive weapons around him.

“We have a ton of weapons this year that I’m really excited about,” Francis said. “Like Coach Lamb said, Tulsa just has to be Tulsa. We’ve got to limit turnovers and penalties early, especially with the tough non-conference schedule that’s going to prepare us for conference play.”
