Tulsa Football Coach Tre Lamb qualifies for Oklahoma Golf State Amateur

Just weeks away from leading the Golden Hurricane into his first season as head coach, Tulsa’s Tre Lamb has punched his ticket to one of the state’s premier amateur golf events.

Lamb fired a 3-over 75 on Thursday during a qualifier at The Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow, officially earning a spot in this year’s Oklahoma State Amateur Championship. The event will take place later this month at Cedar Ridge Country Club, his new home course since moving to Tulsa.

The 39-year-old, one of the youngest head coaches in the FBS, admitted the opportunity came together last minute.

“I probably wouldn’t do it if the amateur wasn’t at Cedar Ridge," Lamb said. I know we’ve got the season coming up, but it’s an opportunity to compete and I like doing it.”

Despite hot 96-degree conditions and a few bumps, including a double bogey on No. 14, Lamb leaned on his short game to steady the round. “I can chip and putt. That saves me a lot,” he said. “I can’t hit it like some of these guys, but I can score with them because I can get the ball in the hole.”

Though he says his clubs typically go back in the closet when football camp kicks off in August, Lamb couldn’t pass up one last shot at competitive golf on a course he knows well. "I get good in July," he joked. "Then I don’t play again till February or March."

Lamb’s local connection is already helping build bonds with the Tulsa golf community and hopefully, future fans. “I’ve played with some great guys who are now saying, ‘We’re going to come to some games.’ That’s what it’s about, being part of the community and putting out a product people want to support.”

Next up for Lamb: Tulsa’s summer OTAs, a four-ball event this weekend, and his State Am debut, just before fall camp officially begins.
