In the second round of the Scottish Open on Friday, former OU Sooner golfer Chris Gotterup tied the course record at The Renaissance Club with a 9-under 61. The career low round helped Gotterup take a two-shot lead into Saturday's third round.
A winner on the PGA Tour, Gotterup proved he could handle sleeping on a lead shooting an even par round of 70. Gotterup will take his 11-under score into Sunday's final round, but it could have been one shot better had his shot on the par 3, 6th hole been an ace and not hit the flag stick and bounce out.
Still, Gotterup has a chance to punch his ticket into next week's Open Championship if he wins or finishes among the top three players that haven't already qualified for the last major of the year.
Gotterup will have to play some good golf on Sunday because he enters the final round at 11-under tied with five-time major winner Rory McIlroy. McIlroy shot 4-under on Saturday to chase down Gotterup.
A Sooner, Gotterup will be joined in the final pairing with one-time OSU Cowboy Wyndham Clark. Like McIlroy, Clark shot a very impressive 4-under 66 in the third round to make up some ground. Clark will enter the final round two shots back and tied for third at 9-under.
Gotterup, Clark, and McIlroy all tee off together at 7:40 am central time.
