Former OSU Golfer tied for lead at the Travelers Championship

Austin Eckroat shot a career low 8-under 62 in the opening round of the Travelers Championship and is tied for the lead with world number one Scottie Scheffler.

Eckroat, who fired a bogey-free round, made three birdies on his opening nine. The Former OSU Cowboy got red hot on the back nine, shooting five-under thanks to an eagle on the Par 5, 13th hole.

A two-time winner on the PGA Tour, Eckroat’s best finish since April was a T-32 finish at the RBC Heritage. Needless to say, Thursday’s low round felt good with Eckroat saying, “My college coach at Oklahoma State would always say when you are off, you really are not that far from playing really good golf.”

Eckroat added, “You are playing on a fine line, and confidence plays a huge part in it. I felt like a week was coming, and it was all going to click. I needed one good round, and it was great to show myself I can still do it today.”

As for Scheffler, the defending Travelers Championship champion took the outright lead at 9-under with a birdie on hole 15. Scheffler, though, gave one back with a bogey on hole 17.

Eckroat isn’t the only OSU product to make some noise in the opening round of the final signature event of the year. Wyndham Clark is tied for third at 6-under, while Viktor Hovland is tied for seventh at 4-under par. Alex Noren will look to make a move on Friday after shooting a 3-under 67 in the first round.

Eckroat will start his second round at 11:30 am Central Time playing alongside Byeong Hun An.
