With TU’s Monday announcement by athletic director Justin Moore that the school is bringing back the men’s golf program, the focus now shifts to who will be the head coach. There is already a lot of interest, including from some who have significant college coaching experience. Former TU standout David Inglis, who has been the head coach at Northwestern for more than a decade, could very well be on a short list of candidates.
One of Inglis’ former teammates on the Golden Hurricane, all-conference player Chris Noel, says he believes the way the program is being funded for a restart should help sustain it and help it thrive long-term. Moore’s statement on Monday included these details:
This relaunch has been made possible through a transformational leadership gift from Tulsa alumni Sharon D. Prince (B.S.B.A. ’85, MBA ’86) and Robert P. "Bob" Prince (B.S.B.A. ’81, MBA ’85), who was a member of the men’s golf team during his time at Tulsa. Additional support for the revival of the program has come from the H.A. & Mary K. Chapman Foundation, Al Walker (B.S. ’79, MBA ’84), Mark Marra (M.S. ’84), and Don Quint Jr. (B.S. ’78).
Noel is a Tulsa native and still competes nationally. He says one of the recruiting advantages in place is the number of high-level courses available in the area. Before the program was cut in 2016, TU players were able to take advantage of opportunities at Southern Hills, Cedar Ridge and The Patriot while Tulsa Country Club served as a home base for practice.
Moore hopes to have an announcement about a new coach on July 1st.
