Tulsa native Chaz “ThunderWof” Stephens is making waves in the local comedy scene with his debut special, The Horse and The Wof, which became the first stand-up comedy special filmed at Tulsa’s historic Spotlight Theater.

The sold-out show also marked a cultural milestone, as Stephens became the first Black artist to produce and headline a full-capacity show in the venue’s 107-year history.

“Last year, my friend Evan Hughes approached me about filming a comedy special,” Stephens said. “I wanted the show to highlight my unique comedy style of call and response.”

In partnership with Prism Cafe, Stephens also sold food for attendees, adding a personal touch to what he described as a dream come true.

From Turley to the Stage

Stephens was born and raised in the Turley area of Tulsa and has lived in the city since birth. He got his start in comedy on Sept. 16, 2016, during an open mic night at the now-closed Comedy Parlor.

“It was the most comical day,” he said. “It rained and my pants were soaked, my truck broke down on the way there, and I lied about my age when I performed.”

Since then, he’s developed a style rooted in observational humor, social commentary, and crowd interaction. He describes his shows as cozy, fun, and driven by connection.

Circle Cinema Premiere

Now, Stephens is bringing his recorded special to the big screen. The Horse and The Wof will premiere at Circle Cinema, becoming the first locally produced stand-up comedy special to be shown in the venue’s 97-year history.

“The Circle has been such an awesome partner,” Stephens said. A portion of the screening’s proceeds will benefit the Union High School Speech and Debate team.

The comedy special will premiere at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. at Circle Cinema. Tickets are available on Circle Cinema's website.

Looking Ahead

Stephens sees momentum building for Tulsa’s comedy scene. He believes local talent is diverse and poised for greater visibility alongside the city’s growing arts community.

With support from his parents, friends, and late sports icon Kobe Bryant as inspiration, Stephens is continuing to push boundaries and represent his hometown.
