A ranch established before Oklahoma statehood is now home to an equine facility. The owner and head trainer of Eighteen Acres Farm, Mindy Coretz, bought the remaining 80 acres of Perryman Ranch in Jenks and built a state-of-the-art English riding center.
Passion to Purpose
On her 7th birthday Coretz sat in a saddle for the first time to learn to ride. "My riding lessons every Wednesday afternoon were the highlight of my week," she continued saying, "I loved it and it just grew from there."
It was fueled solely by passion because Coretz did not have a horse background or know that there were different disciplines out there. "I fell in love with horses, I loved riding, I loved the challenges, I loved learning to read and communicate with and understand the horses, and I happened to be doing that in an English saddle," she said.
English Riding
English riding is a type of horseback riding characterized by using both hands on the reins and often rising and sitting in rhythm with the horse's trot. Eighteen Acres Farm specializes in English riding with an emphasis on the hunter/jumper discipline.
Coretz competed successfully at the Grand Prix and International Hunter Derby levels. She offers professional horse training, riding lessons, boarding, and horse therapy at the new Jenks facility.
From 18 to 80 Acres
With the new facility now complete Coretz is moving her operation from Bixby to Jenks. It was a decision she did not make lightly. "The facility I have been operating out of in Bixby, I love. It is home to me, it is actually where I took my first riding lesson as a kid," she said.
The 80 acres of Perryman Ranch she now owns has its own history. The land, that once covered 250,000 acres, was the Muscogee (Creek) allotment of Mose S. Perryman. The family was made up of tribal and civic leaders. Coretz is preserving and honoring their legacy with a photo display inside the Eighteen Acres Farm facility.
