Merritt's Bakery is helping Oklahoma City Thunder fans cheer the team on to what it hopes will be a 'sweet' victory in the NBA Finals. The Tulsa bakery is making cookies, cupcakes and thumbprints inspired by the team.

Marketing Director Cheyenne Blackwood said, "It has been about 12 years since they have been in the Finals, the last time we really got to celebrate something like this, so we have gone all out."

Early Start

Merritt's Bakery started preparing for Game 1 of the NBA Finals about a week ago. The team created the designs and ordered more product, then on Thursday morning, arrived at 6 a.m. to start decorating. "We are doing colored thumbprints, we are doing cupcakes with basketballs, we are doing icing decorated cookies with the logos, and also plain basketball icing decorated, too," said Blackwood.

Pre-Game Buzz

The bakers, decorators, and even Merritt's customers were all feeling the excitement ahead of Game 1. Nathaniel Nash stopped by for breakfast and left feeling the team spirit. "I like them," he said. "They have been doing real good here lately, they have just been staying on top."

6-year-old Eleanor Faulk watches the games with her dad, a basketball player himself. She and her mom did not come in looking for Thunder treats, but left wanting them. "We have had a couple of our customers come in and they are fully loaded out in their gear, looking for product," Blackwood continued saying, "Then we also have a couple people that once they realized the games tonight, they said let me get a dozen cookies."

Home Team

While the Thunder is technically based out of Oklahoma City, Merritt's Bakery still considers them a hometown team. Blackwood added, "They live in Oklahoma City but that is just where they live, it is really an Oklahoma team."

The cookies and cupcakes are the bakeries way of making sure the team feels the love all the way up the turnpike and so the fans here can feel apart of the action. "Obviously it is the home team, so you have got to root for the home team and we are excited to see them win," said Blackwood.
