Each year in the United States, more than one-third of adults 65 and older experience a fall. Of those who fall, 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries, making falls the leading cause of injury deaths among the elderly.

Research shows that Tai Chi is one of the single most effective activities to help older adults reduce their risk of falling. Ability Resources offers free Tai Chi workshops in Tulsa County, Creek County, and Osage County. Sandie Sullivan, Information & Referral Specialist for the agency, explains the benefits.

Q: What is Tai Chi?

A: Tai Chi started as an ancient Chinese martial art and has evolved into a form of exercise. Our workshops are free for those 60 and older through a grant from INCOG Area Agency on Aging.

Q: What are the benefits of Tai Chi for older adults?

A: Tai Chi improves balance, physical condition, muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility. It can also decrease stress, ease pain and stiffness, and increase a person's overall well-being.

Q: When are the free Tai Chi workshops?

A: The workshops are held twice a week for 1 hour each. Ability Resources offers several sessions throughout the year that are between 8-10 weeks long. The next round of workshops will begin in July. To sign up, call 918-592-1235.
