A teenage girl is recovering in the hospital after a crash late Monday night involving a motorcycle and an SUV near 58th Street and Memorial Drive. As temperatures rise, Tulsa police are reminding drivers to stay alert for motorcyclists.
The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. when a group of teenagers on motorcycles was riding near an apartment complex. According to Tulsa police, an SUV pulled out from the complex and collided with one of the motorcycles.
Officers said the teenage rider struck the SUV and suffered broken bones. She was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Lt. Kyle Murray with the Tulsa Police Department said the warmer weather is bringing more motorcycles onto city streets.
“With the warmer weather, you’re going to see more motorcycles out,” Murray said. “They were traveling with a couple of their friends that were witnesses to this incident.”
Officers are urging both drivers and riders to be extra cautious at intersections and when entering or exiting driveways and parking lots.
One key safety reminder: if you witness a motorcycle crash, do not remove the rider’s helmet. Officers said someone removed the injured girl’s helmet at the scene Monday night, which can lead to further injuries.
Instead, police advise calling 911 and waiting for paramedics to respond.
Police say there are no signs that alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The names of those involved have not been released.
