Hundreds of riders, horses and cattle are filling the Ford Truck Arena this month for the 2025 Breeder’s Invitational Cutting Competition, a nationally recognized event that has called Tulsa home since 2009.
What is a Cutting Competition?
The sport of cutting requires the horse and rider to separate a single cow from a herd and prevent it from returning. While that may sound simple, the skill, speed and communication between horse and rider are critical to success.
It’s a tradition rooted in everyday ranch work, according to Bob O’Bannon, co-founder of the Breeder’s Invitational.
Why Tulsa?
Since moving the competition to Tulsa in 2009, O’Bannon said the city has become a perfect home for the event, and it’s not just the arena that keeps them coming back.
“We love the town, we love the facility, we love the people here,” O’Bannon said. “We just love everything about it, and once we came here, [we] don't ever intend to leave.”
Economic Impact
This year’s competition is expected to award $2 million in prize money, with many of the participants and their teams spending several days — or even weeks — in Tulsa. That brings substantial benefits to local hotels, restaurants and businesses, adding to the city’s growing reputation as a destination for major livestock and rodeo events.
How to Attend
The Breeder’s Invitational is being held at the Ford Truck Arena inside Expo Square and is free to attend through May 23, 2025. Spectators can expect high-level competition from both national and international participants.
