More than 5.5 inches of rain fell in Sallisaw in under eight hours, flooding roads and prompting evacuations across Sequoyah County.
As the water quickly rose around the Sequoyah County Boys and Girls Club, children were trapped inside—leaving first responders and local citizens rushing in to help.
Matt Monroe, a lifelong Sallisaw resident, jumped into action when he realized how bad the flooding was.
🗣️ “I didn't really notice the flooding until I was making my way through town, and then I saw the rain had escalated to what it is.”
When his coworker Kayla Jean needed help reaching her son at the club, Matt didn’t hesitate.
🗣️ “She had a vehicle that probably wouldn't make it through the water, and mine would... so we took a chance.”
Inside the Boys and Girls Club, floodwaters reached up to two feet deep, leaving many children scared and unsure of what was happening.
🗣️ “They saw how flooded everything was... I think it was pretty scary for them.”
Matt praised the city's emergency teams for their role in the evacuation.
🗣️ “They were out there waist-deep with the kids, carrying them back and forth.”
The floodwaters have mostly receded, but the Boys and Girls Club will remain closed through at least the end of the week as cleanup and repairs continue.
Some roads in Sequoyah County remain closed.
