Animal rescue groups are asking for donations on Thursday after rescuing a dog that was found abandoned in a dumpster near 71st and Riverside. Rescuers say it’s one of the worst cases of neglect they’ve ever seen. But they also say that dog, Fern, is a survivor.
It started as a normal workday for a Tulsa sanitation worker on a route near 71st and Riverside. But what he found inside a dumpster prompted a rescue mission.
"He said it's so emaciated. It's skin and bones, and I can tell it's injured,” said Amy Childress Roethig with Animal Aid.
Inside was Fern, abandoned and covered in filth. The sanitation worker called Animal Aid.
“I hope the sanitation worker knows what a special, special thing he did, and what a true, kind, compassionate human being he is to take the time out," she said.
Amy then called the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals. And within minutes, Ashley Dwyer says she was in her car and heading to the scene.
"I was still on the phone with her when I had my purse on, trying to get out the door," said Ashley.
The dog was rushed to the emergency vet, and doctors say she was severely starved and dehydrated. Yet somehow, still sweet.
"I was petting her, and I stood up to talk to the vet—she, you know, woohoo—like, started barking at me, like she wanted me to come back down there," said Amy.
OAA is asking for help paying for Fern’s medical bills, which are more than $4,000. They say the next few days will be critical for her. For Amy, it all comes down to one thing.
"If she doesn’t pull through, at least we gave her a chance. At least she was met her with kindness and compassion," said Amy.
At last check, Fern is still under round-the-clock care. If you'd like to help, you can donate here. Tulsa Animal Services is reviewing security footage from the area and asking anyone with information to come forward.
