Founded in 1988, the Tulsa Herb Society is dedicated to educating and inspiring the public about herbs, plants and gardening. The nonprofit supports local horticulture-related organizations, including the Tulsa Garden Center, New Leaf and the Teaching Garden at Woodward Park.
Members meet on the second Tuesday of every month at the Tulsa Garden Center. The gathering begins with a 9:30 a.m. social time, followed by a meeting at 10 a.m. and a monthly presentation at 11 a.m.
Throughout Tuesdays of the month, members also work on handmade crafts, jams and jellies in preparation for the group’s signature December event, Carols and Crumpets.
Beyond education, the society values the friendships and connections formed among its members. In addition to regular meetings, the group takes occasional trips to visit regional gardens and garden centers.
The Tulsa Herb Society is hosting a free public event on Monday, July 7, at 7 p.m. inside the Tulsa Garden Center auditorium.
The evening will feature a special presentation by horticulture expert Steve Dobbs. His talk, titled Ornamental Edibles in Landscaping, will explore how to incorporate beautiful yet functional plants into garden design.
Steve Dobbs brings 40 years of experience in horticulture, including education, greenhouse production, and landscape maintenance. He recently retired from Oklahoma State University after 12 years as Director of Landscape Services, where he oversaw more than 700 acres of design, installation and maintenance.
Dobbs is the author of The Southern Lawn series and the Oklahoma Gardener’s Guide. He also hosted and produced the OETA television show Oklahoma Gardening from 1990 to 1995. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from OSU and a Master of Science degree in Horticulture from the University of Arkansas.
