The Williams Route 66 Marathon will mark its 20th anniversary in November with thousands of runners and their families expected to descend on Tulsa for a weekend of races and celebration.

What began as a local race has evolved into an internationally recognized event, drawing participants from across the country and around the world. Each year, runners experience Tulsa's art deco architecture and take on a portion of the historic Route 66.

"We're proud to show off Tulsa’s energy, culture, and spirit—and this year, we're planning our biggest celebration yet," said Destiny Green, executive director of the Williams Route 66 Marathon.

Blue Whale To Be Featured on Finishers' Medal

As part of the marathon's Icons of Route 66 medal series, each finisher over the past four years has received a medal featuring a local landmark. This year's fifth and final medal in the series will highlight the Blue Whale of Catoosa—one of Route 66's most recognizable roadside attractions.

"As a Catoosa High School graduate, the Blue Whale holds a special place in my heart," Green said. "It may not be on the course, but it's one of the most beloved and recognizable Route 66 landmarks. It felt like the perfect way to wrap up our Icons of Route 66 medal series—with a nod to something fun, unexpected, and uniquely Oklahoma."

Built in 1972 by zoologist Hugh S. Davis as a wedding anniversary gift to his wife, the Blue Whale has become a favorite stop for Route 66 travelers from around the globe.
