In response to a recent wave of gun violence, Vernon AME Church is bringing together community members, city leaders and faith groups for a rally and candlelight vigil on Thursday evening.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at Vernon AME Church, located at 311 N. Greenwood Ave.
Church leaders say the rally is a call for peace, solidarity and solutions following recent shootings that have shaken parts of the city.
Mayor Monroe Nichols is scheduled to speak at the event, church leaders say, along with other elected officials.
As part of the evening, Vernon AME Church says it will make what it’s calling a “major announcement” regarding its long-term commitment to the community.
Following the rally, a candlelight vigil will take place to honor those lost or injured by recent gun violence. Organizers encourage attendees to bring candles or lights to show unity and remembrance.
