The Tulsa Day Center has reported a rise in the number of people seeking assistance. A recent count reveals that the homeless population in Tulsa has increased by 60 since last year, totaling around 1,500 individuals.

A veteran has been staying at the Day Center for two months. The center is not only witnessing more visitors but also an increase in the severity of health and mental health needs among them.

Daily Impact

Every day, approximately 250 people visit the Tulsa Day Center, with about 85 staying overnight. For individuals like David Schuster, it’s about more than just having a place to sleep.

"I'm diabetic," he said. "So, having a place to store my insulin is really important. I also wear constant glucose monitors, so I always have access to charge."

David emphasizes that his health needs go beyond basic shelter. He has been at the Day Center for two months and believes that more affordable housing options would significantly improve his situation.

The Affordability Crisis

"Housing markets are unaffordable," said Schuster. "Even at minimum wage, there's no way a single person can survive out here anymore."

The CEO of the Tulsa Day Center, Mack Haltam, shares similar concerns.

"One of my main concerns is seeing older adults becoming homeless," he said. "We’re seeing an increase in people aged 55 and older who are on limited incomes. Many are retired or receiving disability, and their incomes aren't keeping up with rising housing costs."

Steps Toward Solutions

The center notes that Mayor Monroe Nichols has a plan that includes steps toward long-term solutions.

"Looking at cities like Houston and New Orleans, there’s a noticeable decline in homelessness. It requires strong leadership from the mayor, and he’s committed to addressing this issue," said Haltam.

Supportive Environment

David appreciates the help he receives at the Day Center.

"It seems like they actually care and are trying to help us get the assistance we need to get our lives back in order," he said.

A Call for Help

The Day Center is currently in need of financial donations as well as essential items such as socks, underwear, and summer clothes.

The Day Center believes that while positive changes are being implemented, it will still take time to see tangible results in the community.
