A Wagoner County family is angry after someone shot and killed two of their longhorns. Investigators say someone pulled over in the middle of the night and fired more than a dozen shots at the livestock.
Two of the longhorns were shot and killed by someone from the side of the road. 14 shell casings were found around the cattle.
It happened in the middle of the night, but nobody knows who is responsible or why they did it.
"When you have livestock, you have losses," said Judy Wingate, owner of the cattle. "To lose them like this is, that's the hard part."
Judy, and her husband, Kirt, have owned the livestock for more than 20 years. They can't make sense of the attack.
"I just can't understand it," said Judy.
The livestock belongs to the Wingates, but have lived on sister-in-law Donna Sperry's property for more than 20 years. She is the one who found them.
"Even though they're their cows, because they're here, I get to see them everyday and interact with them," said Sperry. "I watch them and I just get so excited. When people come to visit, we'll take carrots out and feed them through the fence."
Sperry heard the gunshots but didn't think much of them at first. She now fears what else could have happened.
"They could have shot towards our house," she said. "This is a very serious thing and it makes me worry about all the other friends we have around here that have livestock."
The family says this is a big financial loss but it really hurts because they've had this breed of longhorns for years.
Wagoner County deputies are investigating the incident. Investigators say they are trying to get a vehicle description.
Anyone with information should call the sheriff's office at (918) 485-3124. The Wingate's say there is a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible.
