Sand Springs Police are calling for increased caution from drivers going through crosswalks.

Law Enforcement Concerns About Crosswalks

Officers are getting reports of frequent violations of pedestrian right-of-way laws, particularly at busy intersections.

Business Impact on Main Street

Store owners in the Main Street area express frustration over unsafe driving behaviors. Many highlight the importance of pedestrian traffic to their businesses, sharing instances of near-misses involving customers attempting to cross streets.

"I've seen people step out here and right turners almost flatten them," said Rodney Thomas, owner of an antique shop.

Ongoing Traffic Safety Initiatives

The city has been undertaking improvements in high foot traffic areas, including widening sidewalks and adding additional crosswalks. Deputy Chief Todd Enzbrenner emphasizes the need for a collective effort from both motorists and pedestrians to ensure safety.

"It's dangerous," said Enzbrenner. "Pedestrians have got to be on the lookout and motorists need to be respectful."

Community Engagement and Responsibility

Enzbrenner urges both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant. He advises motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules, while also reminding pedestrians to utilize crosswalks and alert drivers when crossing. The focus is on fostering a safer environment for everyone on the road.
