Three men are accused of trying to break out of a Sand Springs jail.

Officers say they found out about it when the inmate who was supposed to be acting as the lookout had a medical issue.

Sand Springs Police say this is a first and they’ve already fixed the issues to make security at the jail stronger.

WHAT HAPPENED

Investigators say video surveillance shows three men, Logan Ramsey, Justin Larson, and Cody Duncan working together in an attempt to escape the Sand Springs Jail through the ceiling

Officers say Duncan was the lookout but had a medical episode, and that’s when detention officers noticed a security panel on the ceiling had been pried open.

That led to checking the security video and they saw Larson standing on Ramsey’s shoulders trying to unscrew the security panel, while Duncan watched for officers and handed the other two plastic spoons to help.

Officers say the men got the panel open and Larson walked around but couldn’t escape.

Officers say the men weren’t able to put the panel back and the three tried to cover up what happened.

Police say Larson admitted trying to find a way to escape the jail.

JAIL SECURITY

Sand Springs Deputy Chief Todd Enzbrenner says the jail was designed in a way to prevent this from happening.

"We never would have thought that having 12-foot ceilings that somebody would be able to get up to the middle of the room and see what was in that panel, but somebody proved us wrong,” said Enzbrenner. “We'll take steps to mitigate that."

He says they’ve added stronger locks and more security checks as a result of this attempt, but the jail is safe because there isn’t a way to actually get out.

"There's nowhere to go,” said Enzbrenner. “Now, these two kids have additional charges on them that they're going to have to deal with. Everything has consequences, and they're going to have to find out what those are."

Enzbrenner says the jail can only hold people for ten days

WHAT’S NEXT

Ramsey and Larson were sent to the Tulsa County Jail and officers say Duncan will be sent there too once he gets out of the hospital.

Records show Ramsey was just given four years' probation last month for burglary.
