A Pinewood Derby is rolling into town with more than just friendly competition. Friendship Baptist Church in Owasso is inviting car lovers of all ages to participate in a fun-filled racing event while helping a cause beyond the finish line.
The Pinewood Derby will be held Saturday, May 31, starting at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church of Owasso.
Open to Scouts, AWANA members, and individual racers, the event welcomes all pinewood cars—no matter the year they were built—as long as they meet the standard size and 5-ounce weight requirements.
Entry fees are based on how many cars a participant brings:
Anyone who registers by Wednesday, May 28, will receive a free meal ticket valid for a BBQ sandwich, chips and a drink. Registration is available online or at the door.
Participants can test their pinewood cars on the official track on Thursday, May 29, and Friday, May 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. The cost for four test runs is $10. This allows racers to fine-tune their vehicles before race day.
Race day offers more than just the main competition. Awards will be given for first, second and third place finishes based on speed. The Curtis Ellis People’s Choice Award will honor the best car design.
Participants can also go head-to-head in $20 challenge races against friends and family for bragging rights.
Concessions will be available throughout the event, with meal tickets priced at $6.
All proceeds from the Pinewood Derby support The Grahams, missionaries in South Africa who run the Children’s Resiliency Project. The organization works with youth in vulnerable communities and can be found at sacrp.org.
