Tulsa International Airport is hosting a unique event designed to ease the stress of air travel for individuals and families who may need additional support navigating the airport experience.

Scheduled for Friday, May 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Ready for Takeoff event provides a free, step-by-step walkthrough of the travel process, complete with TSA screening and gate access.

Practicing Air Travel in a Supportive Setting

Ready for Takeoff simulates the full airport experience, from check-in at the ticket counter to arriving at the gate. Airport staff will guide participants through each step, helping them get comfortable with the process before they ever board a plane.

Organizers say the goal is to remove the unknowns that can make flying difficult, especially for travelers with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, or developmental disabilities.

Accessibility Resources on Display

Tulsa International Airport is using the event to highlight its accessibility features, including:

  1. The Hidden Disabilities Lanyard program
  2. A dedicated Sensory Room
  3. A Quiet Room for those needing a calm space

These offerings are available year-round to help make travel more inclusive.

Local Organizations Offer Support at Resource Fair

A resource fair held during the event will connect attendees with community organizations that support neurodiverse individuals and their families. Participating groups include:

  1. A New Leaf, Inc.
  2. Rise Staffing and The Hidden Workforce
  3. Together Just
  4. The Bridges Foundation
  5. The Arc of Oklahoma

Registration and Security Requirements

While the event is free, space is limited to 50 participants. Interested families must register in advance here.

Attendees will also need a TUL Visitor Pass to go through TSA screening. After registering, participants will receive detailed instructions via email—including how to obtain the pass, parking information, and other logistics.

Adults will also need to have a REAL ID-compliant form of ID, just as they would for a standard flight.
