Theatre Tulsa is facing a significant setback after receiving notice that a $15,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has been terminated.
The grant was intended to support sensory and neurodivergent-friendly performances featuring youth performers.
The grant termination is part of a broader shift in NEA funding priorities. Theatre Tulsa says the notice it received stated the decision was part of an updated grantmaking policy intended to “focus funding on projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the President.” The agency added, “Funding is being allocated in a new direction in furtherance of the Administration’s agenda... your project, unfortunately, does not align with these priorities.”
Theatre Tulsa says thousands of arts organizations nationwide are reporting similar cuts or terminations as the NEA redirects resources toward different cultural and artistic initiatives.
Despite the funding loss, Theatre Tulsa says it remains steadfast in its mission. The organization, now in its 102nd year, said it will continue offering accessible, inclusive programming to audiences in Tulsa.
