A major change is taking off at airports nationwide, including Tulsa International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will enforce REAL ID requirements for all travelers 18 and older boarding domestic flights.

Here’s what travelers need to know about the new rule, how it may impact your trip, and what options you still have if you're not REAL ID-ready.

Q: What is the REAL ID, and who needs one now?

Anyone 18 or older must show a REAL ID or another form of federally accepted identification to board a domestic flight.

REAL IDs are marked with a gold or yellow star in the top corner of your driver’s license.

The change also applies to TSA PreCheck and CLEAR members.

Q: What happens if I don’t have a REAL ID?

If your ID doesn’t meet federal standards, the TSA says you’ll be required to go through extra screenings. That could mean longer wait times and—in rare cases—being denied entry to your flight altogether.

“You may face additional wait times at the airport,” said Adam Stahl, acting deputy TSA administrator. “In extremely rare circumstances, if we cannot identify or validate your identity, [you may face] denial.”

Stahl added, “We're very confident that we can thread the needle of both enforcing the law [and] also minimizing impacts for folks.”

Q: What other IDs are accepted?

In addition to a REAL ID, travelers can use the following:

  1. A valid U.S. passport
  2. A military ID
  3. A tribal-issued ID

Q: How many Oklahomans have a REAL ID already?

According to Service Oklahoma, about 45% of state residents are currently compliant with the new federal standard.

Q: What should I do if I’m not sure whether my ID qualifies?

TSA urges travelers to check their identification status before heading to the airport. If you don’t have the right ID, the agency recommends arriving at least three hours early to allow time for the additional screening process.

Q: Can I still apply for a REAL ID in Oklahoma?

Yes — the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety says residents can apply for a REAL ID at tag agencies across the state.
