Tulsa’s Mayfest has a theme this year, and it's all about heart, history, and hometown pride. It's inspiring a new art exhibit to match.
Through vibrant colors, these artists are sharing what it means to Stay Gold.
"The Stay Gold Artists, we specifically ask that they follow that theme. So, a lot of them are local artists because they know the story of The Outsiders, they have grown up with it," said University of Tulsa’s Mona Chamberlin. "It was such a rite of passage for young people."
The collection is part of Mayfest. Chamberlin says it's not only the theme of the gallery, it's the theme of the entire festival.
"We went around and conducted surveys of attendees at the festival. One of the things they mentioned repeatedly was they thought it would be cool if we had a theme," she said.
More than 100 artists applied, and only twelve were selected to have their artwork displayed. From block art to murals, all are on display to be admired and even purchased.
Chamberlin says just as The Outsiders is a big part of the fabric of Tulsa, the arts are too.
"We really showcase the talent that we have in Tulsa, and we want to continue that and give people a platform to shine," she said.
The art collection will be on display at 101 Archer for the rest of the month.
