The Rogers State baseball team is headed into the postseason with a ton of confidence. The Hillcats beat No. 19 Fort Hays State 11-1 in eight innings on Senior Day on Saturday to complete the three-game series sweep. With the win, Rogers State improves to 28-20 on the season, 18-17 in MIAA play.
The two teams were scoreless through the first 3 innings, but Weston Peninger changed that with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the 4th. Peninger hit a leadoff homer to straightaway center to give the Hillcats a 1-0.
The game was tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th, when Andrew Ramirez hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Hillcats a 3-1 lead. With the home run, Ramirez tied the single season home run record with 13. He's tied with Blake Kelley (2008) and Cody Campbell (2011).
The RSU bats exploded for 8 runs in the 8th inning to put the game away. One of those runs came from an RBI single through the left side. With that run driven in, he tied the Division II single season RBI record with 59, tying him with Grant Farris (2019).
Colton Anderson earned the win after pitching the final 2 innings out of the bullpen, giving up just 1 hit.
Christopher Spry allowed only 1 run on 4 hits with 7 K's in his 6.0 inning start.
With the win, the Hillcats earned the No. 5 seed in the MIAA Tournament. They will take on No. 4-seed UCO in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Joplin, Mo, at 10 a.m.
