The National Weather Service is expected to survey parts of Delaware County after a powerful storm system moved through early Tuesday, causing widespread damage in and around Grove.
One of the hardest-hit areas is the Delaware County Maintenance Barn, which was reportedly built within the last year.
“Some employees say they were here. Things got real loud. They thought they saw a tornado or at least a very strong storm,” said News On 6’s Cal Day, reporting from the scene.
“This house, some of the county vehicles, and as you can see, just complete destruction. It’s torn apart and thrown into the woods here behind the facility.”
Another barn, as well as the county's sand barn, also sustained damage.
“You can see some siding appears to be ripped apart and also the roof seems to have come up as well, which really shows you just how strong those winds are,” Day said.
“A tree has crashed into the top of it.”
Elsewhere around Grove, residents spent the day picking up debris and surveying property damage left behind by the storm. Tree limbs were scattered across neighborhoods, power poles were knocked down, and several buildings were heavily damaged or destroyed.
Melissa Russell said she and her husband were watching the storms unfold on TV when they decided to take shelter.
She says it was a loud storm and her husband thought he saw rotation and even a lowering at one point.
When the storm passed, the Russells found multiple trees down and buildings on their property destroyed.
“We've had some storms here before and we've had—my husband's actually had some trees cut down because they would blow over. And this one’s going to take a lot longer,” Melissa said.
Despite the damage, emergency management officials say no injuries have been reported. However, roads northeast of the high school and in other parts of Grove remained closed Tuesday afternoon while utility crews worked to restore power.
