As heavy rain looms over the region, Nowata County Emergency Management is issuing urgent warnings about rising flood risks.
With Oologah Lake already at high levels and some roads rendered impassable, officials are asking residents to stay vigilant and take important precautions to stay safe.
Here's what you need to know as conditions continue to deteriorate.
1. Never drive into floodwaters
Officials stress that even six inches of water can sweep a vehicle off the road. Beyond the immediate danger, floodwaters often conceal hidden damage that can make travel even more hazardous.
2. Expect damaged and impassable roads
Some roads near Oologah Lake are already underwater and unsafe. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, leave extra time for travel, and seek alternate routes.
3. Be vigilant and patient
Emergency managers ask drivers to remain alert for changing conditions, especially in areas prone to flash flooding. Extra caution is advised in low-lying and unlit areas, particularly at night.
4. Protect livestock early
Ranchers should move livestock to higher ground and plan safe feed routes now, before water levels rise further. Nighttime and low-visibility conditions add risk to relocating animals during emergencies.
5. Prepare for more rain this week
With forecasts predicting additional rainfall, flood risks are expected to increase. Emergency management advises everyone to monitor weather updates and be ready to act quickly if conditions worsen.
