The Tulsa Zoo announced the death of a newborn chimpanzee, who died shortly after birth on Tuesday, April 22.

Zoo officials said the infant, born to a chimpanzee named Zuri, suffered fatal injuries when another member of the troop took the newborn following delivery. Veterinary staff attempted to save the infant but ultimately made the decision to humanely euthanize him due to the severity of his injuries.

“Zuri is healthy and under close observation by our animal care and veterinary teams as she recovers,” the zoo said in a statement on social media.
