A 10-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after being struck by a car while riding his bike near East 51st Place North and North Hartford Avenue on Monday, according to Tulsa Police.

Officers said the boy rode into the street to cross when he was hit by a driver who immediately stopped. Police said the driver did not have a valid driver's license or insurance but stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The child was hospitalized with some injuries but is expected to recover, authorities said.

Tulsa Police Lt. Stephen Florea urged parents to teach children about bicycle safety and the importance of following traffic laws.

"People need to remember if you're on a bicycle, you still have to obey the rules of the road. Stop signs—you still have to stop, obviously. This is what can happen if you run across the street without stopping for the stop sign," Florea said.

The vehicle involved in the crash was towed from the scene.
