Students across Bixby Public Schools are back in class for the first day of the new school year. Parents and students spent last week preparing by meeting teachers, picking up schedules and, in some cases, collecting classroom devices.

Here are five key things families should know as the school year begins.

1. Morning start times

The first bell for Pre-K through sixth grade rings at 7:50 a.m.

Middle school and high school students begin their day at 8:50 a.m.

2. New superintendent

The district announced back in April that Lydia Wilson would be taking over as superintendent this year.

Wilson has spent 37 years in public education, with 32 of those years serving the Bixby community in various roles. This includes stints as interim superintendent in 2018 and then as associate superintendent.

3. Free and reduced lunch applications

Bixby officials encourage all families to fill out the free and reduced lunch application, especially if they may qualify.

Applying not only helps families but also affects the district’s eligibility for state and federal funding.

4. Why funding matters

That funding supports technology in the classroom, remediation for students, transportation and professional development for teachers. It also impacts the district’s ability to apply for certain grants.

5. Resources available online

The free and reduced lunch application and the list of recommended apps and websites are available on the district’s website.
