The first day of school will have to wait a bit longer for Okmulgee High School students. The district is unexpectedly moving classrooms from the existing building to a temporary spot, which is causing delays.
The district says there are structural issues with the current building. They were discovered about two weeks ago, according to Superintendent LuVona Copeland.
Copeland said parts of the existing building would have been closed, so district leaders decided to move all classes out of an abundance of caution. The change was approved during an emergency board meeting.
Copeland said there will be no changes to schedules or curriculum as part of the move.
High schoolers will report to what’s called the “CAAT Building.” The building is also owned by the district and is currently occupied by Green Country Technology Center.
Copeland said there is room for both schools to have class.
It’s unknown right now. Copeland said more people will examine it. In the meantime, administrators and teachers are getting the CAAT Building ready for students.
Other students started on August 14.
Copeland said three of the six allocated snow days will be used to make up for the missed days. The first day for high schoolers will now be Tuesday, August 19.
Copeland said buses will transport students in extracurricular activities to the right spot.
