Less than a year after opening in Tulsa, SCHEELS has drawn steady crowds to its 250,000-square-foot sporting goods store, which features everything from athletic gear to a Ferris wheel and an aquarium.
Store leader Pete Philippi said the city has been a perfect fit, citing Tulsa’s strong interest in sports and outdoor activities.

The company now hopes to open a location in Oklahoma City, pending a vote by the Oklahoma City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The store would be built on the west side of Lake Hefner Parkway, north of the Kilpatrick Turnpike, and SCHEELS is requesting $8 million in incentives to help fund the project.
Plans call for a 300,000-square-foot store with construction expected to take about two years. If approved, the store would open in 2028 and employ about 500 people, most of them local hires.

Founded in 1902 in Minnesota as a hardware store, SCHEELS has grown to more than 35 locations nationwide.
Philippi said the company’s goal is not rapid expansion but to be deeply seeded and rooted in the communities.
While awaiting the Oklahoma City decision, the Tulsa store remains busy with back-to-school and hunting season promotions, as well as a partnership with the local Okie brand for SCHEELS-themed hats.
