The iconic USS Batfish submarine in Muskogee is one step closer to a new home after state lawmakers approved $4 million to help relocate the World War II vessel.

Closed since severe flood damage in 2019, the historic submarine will soon undergo a carefully coordinated move with support from both public funding and a growing local fundraising effort.

Why the USS Batfish Needs a New Home

The USS Batfish has been closed to the public since it was partially submerged during historic flooding in 2019. The damage made it unsafe and inaccessible for visitors, halting its operations as a museum and memorial site.

The Plan to Move It

The approved funding will support a complex process to lift the submarine, place it onto a transport trailer, and float it down the Arkansas River to Three Forks Harbor at the Port of Muskogee.

Funding the Future

In addition to the state allocation, a fundraising campaign is underway to help build a new museum at the submarine’s future site.

Supporters say the new facility will offer expanded exhibits and educational opportunities to honor the vessel’s legacy.
