As the new school year begins for districts across the state, the American Red Cross is encouraging parents to use this time to review safety tips and emergency plans with their children.

The organization recommends making sure kids know important information such as their home address, phone number, and how to contact a parent or another trusted adult in case of an emergency.

Parents are also urged to create or review their family’s emergency plan, which can include meeting spots, emergency contacts, and what to do in various situations.

School schedules vary across Oklahoma. Some districts have already been in session for weeks, while others, including Tulsa Public Schools, will start later this month.

The Red Cross says reviewing these details now can help children feel prepared and confident as they start the school year
