City Year Tulsa is a nonprofit organization that partners with Tulsa Public Schools and KIPP Tulsa University Prep High School to help students in under-resourced schools succeed.
Since its launch in 2014, the program has supported thousands of students by providing academic support, mentorship, and fostering positive relationships to keep students on track to graduate.
Each year, a diverse team of AmeriCorps members ages 18 to 25 commits to a full year of service. These young adults work full time in schools, helping improve student attendance and course performance in English and math.
They collaborate closely with teachers and school leaders to create supportive learning environments and strengthen student engagement within their communities.
AmeriCorps members develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through hands-on experience mentoring students and managing classroom activities.
They also gain valuable experience with data-driven goal setting and time management. Organizers say beyond professional skills, members build empathy and resilience.
In addition to personal growth, members earn a $7,395 Segal Education Award for college or student loans. Locally, graduates have access to tuition-free undergraduate degrees through Tulsa Community College and OSU-Tulsa, and a tuition-free master’s degree at Oklahoma State University.
Applications for the 2025–2026 school year are open until Sept. 12. Service begins Oct. 14. Recruitment for the 2026–2027 school year will begin soon, allowing prospective members to plan ahead.
