A Tulsa man has filed a lawsuit against the City of Tulsa after claiming a police K9 bit him during a conversation with officers.
According to the lawsuit, Jerry Ponder called police in February to report hearing gunshots near his home. While speaking with two officers, the suit alleges that one of their police dogs attacked him. It says the dog first bit his leg, then his arm. The filing says the officers had to physically pull the dog off of him.
Ponder’s lawsuit outlines a series of events that began when he contacted Tulsa Police to report nearby gunfire. While outside talking with responding officers, the suit claims one of the officers’ canines had a 15-foot leash and bit Ponder unprovoked.
Court documents state that both officers had to intervene to stop the dog.
The injuries were severe enough to require a four-day hospital stay, according to the lawsuit. Ponder is reportedly facing more than $65,000 in medical expenses and claims he now suffers from permanent physical injuries and anxiety related to the incident.
He is seeking $175,000 in damages from the City of Tulsa.
Tulsa Police confirmed that a shooting had occurred in the area on the night in question. It is unclear whether the officers or the canine involved were responding directly to that call.
News On 6 reached out to city officials for comment on the lawsuit, but has not received a response.
The lawsuit is pending in district court.
This is a developing story.
