The Tulsa Police Department is mourning the death of longtime homicide detective John Brown, a respected officer whose decades of service left a lasting impact both locally and nationally.

Brown died after battling cancer, the department confirmed.

From Beggs to the Badge

Originally from Beggs, Brown joined the Tulsa Police Department in 1989, beginning what would become a distinguished law enforcement career.

Just five years into the job, in 1994, he earned the department’s Medal of Valor for showing outstanding bravery during an undercover investigation.

A Familiar Face on National Television

Brown became a recognizable figure to audiences across the country through his appearances on the TV show “The First 48.”

His work on the program reflected the intensity and urgency of real-life homicide investigations in Tulsa, helping shine a light on the city’s efforts to solve violent crimes.

Loved by the Community

Beyond his reputation on television, Brown was deeply admired in Tulsa.

The department described him as a respected colleague, and community members remembered him as someone who truly cared about the people he served.

Brown played for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane from 1983 to 1987. The team shared the following statement on social media: "We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Tulsa Football linebacker John Brown. Our hearts and sympathies are with the Brown family and friends."

Statement from Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols:

"Today, we mourn the loss of detective John Brown, a dedicated member of the Tulsa Police Department who served our city for over 35 years. Detective brown spent his career protecting Tulsa families and seeking justice for victims and his service will not be forgotten.
My heart is with his family, loved ones and the entire TPD community during this time. May we all take a moment to reflect on his passionate service to Tulsa and the impact her had on so many during his life."

Family and Remembrance

Brown is survived by his wife and three children. The department has not announced funeral arrangements at this time.
