The University of Tulsa has appointed alumnus and former vice president Rick Dickson as interim president. The announcement follows the May departure of President Brad Carson, who led the university for almost four years.

The university says Dickson, a Tulsa native, brings decades of leadership experience and a deep connection to the institution as it begins the search for its next permanent president.
Rick Dickson is no stranger to The University of Tulsa. A graduate and former student-athlete, Dickson first served as the university’s vice president and director of athletics from 1990 to 1994, then returned to that role from 2020 to 2024.
“Rick’s dedication to the university is unwavering,” said Marcia MacLeod, chair of the UTulsa Board of Trustees. “In times of transition, strong and steady governance is vital, and it’s a hallmark of Rick’s leadership throughout his career.”
Outside of UTulsa, Dickson led athletic departments at Washington State University and Tulane University, where he was recognized for his fundraising success, community building, and commitment to student development.
After retiring in 2016, he launched a consulting firm assisting higher education institutions in areas like Title IX compliance, fundraising, and facility planning.
“I was raised in Tulsa and developed by UTulsa, where I started my career and grew my family,” Dickson said in a university statement. “I am living proof that The University of Tulsa prepares students to achieve their dreams.”
He added that he is “thrilled to join the leadership team that is propelling this university forward.”
Beyond academia, Dickson remains active in public service. He sits on the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board, Tulsa Regional Tourism Board of Directors, USTA Collegiate Tennis Committee and the Team Gleason Board of Directors, an organization supporting people living with ALS.
The university's Board of Trustees launched a formal search for its next permanent president. In the meantime, Dickson will oversee university operations with support from the existing executive leadership team.
