A man remains in serious condition after being shot by a Broken Arrow police officer Sunday during a confrontation that followed a traffic stop near Aspen Avenue and the Broken Arrow Expressway.
Investigators say the man attempted to flee the stop and then reached for a weapon during a struggle with the officer.
According to the Broken Arrow Police Department, the incident began around 4 p.m. on Sunday when an officer pulled over a vehicle in the parking lot of the Clarion Hotel located near Aspen Avenue.
Police say the man got out of the car and ran. After a short chase, the officer tackled him, and a physical struggle followed. During that struggle, police say the man tried to pull a gun.
The officer shot the man three to four times, according to investigators. Officers provided medical aid on the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was then taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Police say the officer involved suffered minor injuries during the incident but did not require hospitalization.
Broken Arrow Police Major Stephen Garrett said the investigation is ongoing and will take several days as detectives gather all the facts, review evidence and interview witnesses.
“They got into a physical altercation and he produced a weapon,” Garrett said. “I can’t say or speak as to what was in his mind — I don’t know — but he produced a handgun, and the officer fired his weapon and struck him.”
As is standard in officer-involved shootings, the officer has been placed on administrative leave.
Police have not released the names of either the suspect or the officer involved.
