A Tulsa lawyer known for his outspoken criticism of state regulators is suing the Oklahoma Bar Association in federal court, seeking to have his suspended law license reinstated.
Ron Durbin, an attorney who has represented clients in the cannabis industry, claims the Bar retaliated against him after he spoke out about alleged corruption and mismanagement. The Oklahoma Supreme Court approved the emergency suspension of his license in April 2024.
Durbin's license was suspended after he publicly criticized both the Oklahoma Bar Association and state officials. His comments focused on how the cannabis industry was being regulated, calling out what he described as systemic issues within the regulatory system.
The Bar Association’s suspension case against Durbin lists 20 separate complaints, though details of those have not been publicly released in full.
Durbin’s lawsuit argues that the suspension violates his constitutional rights, specifically free speech and due process. His legal team says the move to suspend his license amounts to retaliation for his public commentary.
A spokesperson for the Oklahoma Bar Association declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
In a separate issue, Durbin pleaded no contest earlier this year to swearing at Tulsa County employees and threatening legal action after a dispute involving a filed document. That incident was not part of the Bar’s suspension order but may factor into the broader case.
The state Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the final outcome of the disciplinary case against Durbin. Meanwhile, the federal lawsuit will now proceed as Durbin continues to fight to get his law license back.
