Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is a nonprofit organization that creates one-to-one mentorship relationships between adult volunteers and children facing adversity.
Known as Bigs and Littles, these pairings are designed to boost self-esteem, decision-making skills and overall life direction.
The program is recognized as the largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network in the country. It is recommended by the CDC and supported by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Many Littles in the program have experienced difficult circumstances such as abuse, parental incarceration or exposure to domestic violence.
These adverse childhood experiences can lead to long-term consequences, including substance abuse, depression and chronic health issues. Through mentorship, Bigs provide stability and positive role models.
Research shows that Littles are 20% more likely to attend college and earn 15% more over their lifetime.
Bowl For Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma’s annual peer-to-peer fundraising event. Teams of six are encouraged to raise a combined $900—about $150 per person.
Those who meet the fundraising goal are invited to a celebration event at Andy B’s in Tulsa. The event is scheduled for August 7 at 6 p.m. and will feature glow bowling, pizza, music and door prizes.
Participants can raise funds through creative means, including social media campaigns, tournaments, raffles and more. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
Organizers say there are multiple ways the community can support Big Brothers Big Sisters. Forming a fundraising team or sponsoring the Bowl For Kids’ Sake event directly supports the organization's mission.
Individual donations are also welcome. Additionally, those interested in making a long-term impact can sign up to become a Big. More than 120 children in the Tulsa area are currently waiting to be matched with a mentor.
