The Collinsville Planning Commission votes down a request to rezone more than 150 acres that would have paved the way for apartments, condos, and commercial development. People who live near the property say it floods, and they believe the development would have made things worse.
That meeting wrapped up around 9:30 p.m. after nearly five hours of intense discussion. The Collinsville Planning Commission ultimately decided in a 4 to 1 vote not to move forward with the rezoning because of what they describe as too much gray area right now.
The land discussed in the meeting sits just off Highway 169 and 136th Street North. Tanner Consulting requested to rezone the more than 150 acres from agricultural to a Planned Unit Development, in order to clear the way for single-family homes to be built. People who live nearby say this land already floods, and development would push water into their homes.
Dozens of Collinsville residents showed up to Thursday's meeting at City Hall to voice their frustration. They asked the city for flood mitigation before any rezoning is approved.
"We do receive a lot of water that comes off that property and into our neighborhoods. And the secondary aspect was just we didn't feel like that kind of development was right for our area," said Mishela Deboer.
Folks we spoke to say spring flooding already pushes area creeks to their limits, and they believe this project would’ve made things worse for Collinsville.
News On 6 asked the developer and members of the Planning Commission for a comment after tonight’s vote, but they all declined.
