For retired Navy veteran Jim Atkins, Monday afternoon started like any other — until he noticed something was missing.
“I turned the corner to mow my yard, and I'm like, my trailer is gone,” Atkins said.
The 16-foot flatbed trailer had been parked under a tarp and loaded with wood for a deck project. After checking his security footage, Atkins discovered it was stolen the day before — Sunday — at exactly 3:55 p.m.
Surveillance video shows a woman casually walking up to Atkins’ front porch, pretending to knock, then returning to a truck. Moments later, the truck pulls around, hooks up to the trailer, and drives off.
“Lady walks up on the front porch, acts like she's knocking, closes the screen door, goes back, gets in the truck. They pull around, hooked up to it, down the street it goes,” Atkins said.
According to the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office, a man was also involved, helping hook the trailer up to the vehicle.
The trailer wasn’t just sitting idle. Atkins had recently put three new tires on it and used it frequently for both personal use and church work. Now, with only a smaller trailer available, hauling supplies is much more difficult.
“I've got a smaller trailer, but that 16-foot trailer, you can put a whole lot of stuff on there,” Atkins said.
Atkins suspects the thieves had been watching him. He believes the timing — on a Sunday afternoon, just before 4 PM — was no coincidence.
“They scope it, and they look, and they watch and they learn... this happened in the afternoon, which amazed me, because usually Sunday afternoons, I'm home feeding the deer, doing stuff in my yard,” Atkins said.
The Wagoner County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help identifying the woman seen in the surveillance video. Authorities say if she’s caught, the felony theft charge could carry serious consequences due to the trailer’s value.
