Chris Gotterup outdueled Rory McIlroy, a five-time Major winner, to win the Genesis Scottish Open at 15-under par.
Overcome with emotion after the win, Gotterup could barely hold tears back saying, "I don't think I can get it out, but everyone at home I can't wait to see everyone. It is just awesome, I can't keep it together. I held it together on the course and had a great time. Now, I get to play in The Open next week."
Both Gotterup and McIlroy started the final round tied at the top of the leaderboard at 11-under par. Gunning for his second victory on the PGA Tour, Gotterup made a bogey on his first hole. The former OU Sooner then settled in by pouring in birdies on three, seven, and eight shooting 2-under on the front nine.
Gotterup added birdies on holes 10 and 11, but then gave one back with a bogey on 15. Clinging to a one shot lead over McIlroy at the Par 5, 16th hole Gotterup poured in a 10 foot birdie putt to extend his lead to two.
That was enough as Gotterup was clutch on 17 and 18 playing steady golf and making pars.
With the win, Gotterup has earned a spot in the last Major Championship of the year next week, the Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
